Winter Pecan Horns

This post is sponsored in conjunction with Christmas Cookies Week. I received product samples from sponsor companies to aid in the creation of the Christmas Cookies Week recipes. All opinions are mine alone.

When you hear “Christmas cookies”, do you think of a certain type of cookie? For me, it’s three – the three that my Opa made us in huge batches every year.

We’d always look forward to the package he’d send in December with oranges picked from his backyard trees and an enormous amount of gingerbread, butter cookies, and these pecan horns.

I love his recipes so much – but hardly anyone needs to be cranking out 15 dozen cookies, especially this year! I’ve spent time adapting his bakery-scale recipes measured by weight into something more manageable to the family tradition would live on.

These pecan horns are simple, and delicious. They practically melt in your mouth and are perfect with a cup of tea!

Jump to:

Ingredients

  • 13 Tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup pecan pieces (I used Millican Pecan)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

This is a really forgiving dough to work with. My only real tip is to make sure your pecan pieces are small enough to incorporate in well. If they’re on the larger side, just give them a quick chop!

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 390 degrees.
  • With a mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg.
  • Beat in the flour until well combined.
  • Fold in the pecan pieces.
  • Take about a Tablespoon of dough and roll it into a horn shape and place it on a nonstick baking sheet (I used Anolon).
  • Bake for 9 minutes. The cookies should be set and slightly browned on the bottom but will not brown anywhere else.
  • Let cool on the pan, then roll each in powdered sugar.
  • Store in an airtight container.

The dough does not spread when baked so you can put these cookies pretty close together – I usually get all the dough on one baking sheet. If you’re not using a good non-stick pan, like an Anolon pan, make sure to line it with baking parchment.

And make sure you let them cool enough before rolling in the powdered sugar or the sugar will melt!
